Road Construction at Rt. 53 and Renwick Road

Published: August 14, 2025.

As the new academic year approaches, we are reminding drivers of the ongoing construction work at the intersection of Illinois Route 53 (Independence Boulevard) and Illinois Route 7 (Renwick Road) at the southeast corner of the Romeoville campus. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s project to improve the intersection has been underway for several months and will continue into the fall semester.

The project which involves modifying the existing intersection to allow for an additional dedicated left turn lane on southbound Illinois 53, installing new modernized traffic signals, new guardrails, and improved drainage, is anticipated to be completed in late 2025.

Throughout construction, at least one lane in both directions remains open on both Route 53 and Renwick Rd. Drivers can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
